Google Cardboard

Full of excitement I listened as Mrs Tele’a gave her instructions. A Google Expedition was held at Point England School introducing a new and exciting gadget called Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is a headset built of Cardboard. You simply insert a smartphone into the piece, hold it to your face, select a location and enjoy. The year 8 students were waiting to experience a new virtual reality world.  

I was surprised as I saw all the headsets spread on the table. We were told to pick one. It was the size of a Big Mac hamburger. Eager to try Google Cardboard I held it to my head. The first location was the Borneo rain forest, where we spotted David Attenborough a famous narrator and scientist.

I was mind blown. I felt as if I was actually in the Borneo rain forest. As I turned my head the image turn with it. It shows how technology these days has evolved and how it is still evolving. There was a trigger on the side that caused the 360 degree image to zoom in. We visited other popular locations including Palace of Versailles, The Burj Khalifa, Space, Washington Monument and others.

In conclusion we had an appealing experience as we visited new locations. I found it very neat and I would love to purchase the Google Cardboard one day so I can play around with it. I don't see it being used for education.

Tiritiri Matangi Trip

Tiritiri Matangi island is an open sanctuary, home to many endangered species. The Point England year 7 & 8 extension group recently received the chance to visit the island. We were extremely blessed as D.O.C (Department of Conservation) paid for the whole trip. I found the trip inspiring and very educational.

It was a cold Wednesday morning at precisely 07:30 AM. The yr 7 & 8 extension group waited patiently at school. Receiving my amazing new blue water bottle I was put into a groups. I then entered a shuttle bus which took us from school to Britomart. Once we arrived at Britomart we meet a little team from D.O.C and together waited to board the ferry.

As I stood at the back of the ferry, I admired the view while struggled to stand. We were heading for Tiritiri on a ferry. I loved standing on the deck of the ferry. I stood, staring at the sea becoming one with nature. Looking at the ocean the sun shone bright reflecting off the water. It was really windy, but I loved the view. At the time I had wished I was a dolphin, so I could dive into the water and swim rapidly to anywhere I liked.

Once we arrived on the island, we were greeted by a lovely group of people who worked for D.O.C. We got into our groups and began our tour/walk. Our group began by looking at the island map and had a short history lesson on the island. As we strolled up and down the track we were listening and looking out for different animals (mainly birds). Every time we heard a bird call our tour guide amazingly was able to name everyone. She was very good at her job, I could tell that she enjoyed working on the island and that she care for it as well.

Takahe  Pukeko

Our tour was over and we ate lunch. “I should be a photographer.” I said while flicking through the photos I took. After lunch we looked at the lighthouse and its history. Did you know that the Tiritiri Matangi lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in New Zealand? Also in WW2 it was used to spot the enemy boats. “Oh gosh, what is that?!” I screamed. I had unintentionally captured everyone's attention. As I looked down I saw a Takahe but I didn't know what it was. It was so close. As I freaked out I was deciding whether it was an overweight or maybe pregnant Pukeko.  I mean, look at the two images above this paragraph, they look similar yeah.

We began our scavenger hunt. I didn’t get the chance to complete it as I was busy playing with the microscope looking at different objects like sponges. Okay looking at sponges might sound boring, but it is actually very interesting. Sadly it was time to head back to the wharf to board the ferry and head back to Auckland. The fun day was over. Sad Emoji  but I had learnt a lot.

So in conclusion I had an amazing day on the island and learnt many things including the difference between a Pukeko and a Takahe. I would like to thank D.O.C for sponsoring this event, the parent helpers for coming along and our extension teacher. I loved the island.

Polyfest 2015 Gift Bags

Waiting to receive a Black ASB gift bag, I was full of curiosity. “I wonder what is in there” I thought to myself. I watched all the other students draw objects out of their bags. My classmates and I were at the 2015 Polyfest collecting ASB gift bags. Finally I was given a bag by one of the generous female ASB workers. I politely thanked her.

I assumed there was something like stickers etc, but the bag contained a small sized ASB bottle of sunscreen, an ASB water bottle, an ASB hackey sack, a pair of ASB sunglasses and an ASB sun hat. This is an amazing act of kindness, acknowledging a vast amount of students by giving each and every one of them an ASB gift bag that had all sorts of different things in it.

I'd like to thank ASB for providing all these gifts, although not many people thanked them. I would like to say a big thank you for everything you have done. I am truly grateful.

Immersion Assembly

At the start of every term Pt England School holds an immersion assembly introducing the topic for the term. During the immersion assembly every team performs an item announcing to the school what their team is focusing on for the term. The whole school is learning about Art Attack but every team is learning about different things around Art Attack.

Team 1 has been inspired by the beauty of the environment, so they will be visiting the creek to have a picnic. In their item Mr Jacobsen (vice principal) painted a landscape picture of the beach. As he was painting, the teachers throw chocolate fish out to random students.

Team 2 are focusing on the primary colours Red, Yellow and Blue. They viewed a video with people mixing primary colour. Mixing Red and Yellow makes Orange. Mixing Blue and Red makes Purple. Mixing Yellow and Blue makes Green.

Team 3 are looking at the backgrounds of different artist, what painting they are most famous for and how they paint. e.g Leonardo Da Vinci was famous for his painting, the Mona Lisa.

Team 4 are learning about famous paintings and famous artist. In their item they held an art contest where the audience voted which painting they liked the most. There were paintings from back in the day as well as current paintings.

Team 5 painted 3 portraits. The first portrait was of Mr Jacobsen (vice principal) painted by Mrs Lagitupu and Mrs Paget. The second portrait was of Mrs Jarman (vice principal) painted by Mr Barks and Mrs Nua. The third portrait was of Mr Burt (principal) painted by Mrs Squires and Miss Clark.

They only used black and white paint and they painted it upside down. While they painted a 4 min long movie played. Once they finish they flipped it making it rightside up. Everyone glanced at the 3 portraits shocked. It looked amazing.

I find art fun and I’m looking forward to this term.

Little Red Riding Hood

This is a summarise of the story Little Red Riding Hood and it will teach you the morale.

Once upon a time there lived a little girl called Little Red Riding Hood. She was on her way to her Grandma's house because Grama was ill. On her way she came across a wolf. “ Where are you going?” the wolf asked. “ I am on my way to Grandma's house, she is ill and I baked a Rainbow cake for her” Little Red Riding Hood replied. The wolf had a plan and left. When Little Red Riding Hood got to Grandma's house. She knocked on the door and said “Its me Little Red Riding Hood”. “Come in” Grama awserd. Little Red Riding Hood cut the Rainbow cake and give it to Grama. Suddenly Grama ate Little Red Riding Hood and the cake because she was really the wolf. The end

So the morale of the story was don’t talk to strangers.

If you are walking around in Glen Innes and if you see a stranger you can give him a small hello but you should not tell him what you are doing unless you know him because if you do he might follow you and kidnap you and we don’t want that to happen right. The Three Little Pigs

There live three little pigs and one mother pig. They lift home and begin finding thing to make a cottage. The first pig found a stack of hay and made a quick hay house which was not so smart. The second pig found a pile of sticks so he made a house from stick. But the third pig who was very smart bort some brick. The sunset and the third pig finished his house went a wolf dropped by and went to the house of hay. He blow it down and ate the pig. Then he went to the house of sticks and did the same thing. He went to the brick house and tried to blow it down but it stood firm. He tried to climb into the chimney and dived right into a pot with boiling water. The wolf ran back to the woods never to be seen again.

So the morale of the story was to take your time and you will get good results.

In life you will come across many opsd coles and if you take your time then you will get good results. Like for example if you are told to take care of an apple tree and you water it every day and do all those thing to help it grow then the tree will grow good apples for you to enjoy. But if you don’t take good care of the poor tree, it won't grow and perjus apples. Which choice would you chose, Take care of the apple tree or don’t do anything to help it. I know I would take care of the apple tree. I hope you will take your time with what you do because you will get good results.

Our River Pt England - Poem

Poem:

Pt England is like a river. 
More and more water joins us. 
They choose whether they want to stay clean or turn into dirty water. If they choose to turn dirty then we will have some bad children.
Pt England starts to turn dirty so we stand strong. 
We teach the dirty water how to respect, how to love and that everything is always better together.
This changes everything back to normal.
Now our river flows within clean water.
This can help us students get a future we deserve.
So now our river which is Pt England, is a strong school where our kids are on the path to victory and success!
