Home made instruments

Materials Needed:
  • Jar (with a top)
  • Rocks

Instructions for Homemade Instrument:
  1. Take the lid off the jar
  2. Fill the jar with rocks
  3. Use the lid to close the jar. Make sure it is on tight
  4. Once the jar is closed tightly, start shaking

How to make a Shaker

Main reason:
As you shake the jar the rocks move around creating sound. The movements are also called vibrates. Vibrates create sound wave which enter your ear. If used right you can create amazing sounds.

Second reason:
As the sound waves enter your ear it make the eardrum vibrate. The vibrations turn into signals that your brain understand as sound

Third reason:
If you didn’t shake it, then you would not be able to hear anything. The reason to this is because the rocks are not moving around. If the rocks aren't moving around there is nothing that is creating sound.

Why Is Swimming Important:

Why Is Swimming Important:
One really important skill to learn in life is how to swim. It can save your life. If you don’t know how to swimming and you get lost at sea all alone you will die. You shouldn’t always rely on life jackets etc, what if there are no life jackets. How will you survive in the deep Blue sea?

A basics technique to learn is how to float. It is really easy. All you need to do is trust yourself and relax. This can be scary but you just need to have faith and believe in yourself. Another good technique to learn is how to hold your breath underwater for a long time.

Swimming is really important. If you ever get the chance to take swimming lessons I think you should, but it is up to you. Swimming can save your life.

Guitars

Musical instruments are amazing. We are really lucky to have them. Especially guitars. Guitars can make all sorts of sounds. Do you know how those sound are made?

The parts of a guitar are the neck, fret, tuning peg, 6 metal strings, head(top), sound hole, bridge and the hollow wooden body. All these parts help the guitar make sounds.

As you strum the strings they vibrate. The vibrations create sound wave. The sound waves enter the sound hole on the guitar. It bounces off the wood and comes out louder. That is how guitars create sound.


As you strum with your right hand your other hand will need to press down on the strings. Doing this changes the pitch that the guitar makes. As you move your hand closer to the sound hole the pitch becomes higher and as you move your hand closer so the tuning pegs the sound become lower.

Guitars are very fascinating aren't they. If you ever get the chance to take guitar lessons I think you should take it. The talent to be able to play the guitar is amazing.

Funnel ear

Science experiment:

Question: What will happen to the sound if I change the shape of a piece of paper? (e.g. from a flat shape to a funnel shape)

The sound will get blurrier every time the hole narrows.

Materials needed:

Paper, Tissue, Tape

Experiment (procedure):

e.g. Step 1 - Hold a flat piece of paper by your ear. Cover your opposite ear with your hand. Get your friend to speak to you. What’s the sound like?

Step 2 - Roll the piece of paper into a funnel shape. Once again, put the funnel against your ear. Face the funnel towards your partner and listen to them speak. What does it sound like?

Step 3 - Face the funnel to the side while your partner speaks to you. Did it make a difference to the sound that you can hear?

Step 4 - Put some cotton balls or tissue paper into the funnel at one end. Is there a difference?

Observations:    When the paper was flat, it was normal.  When it was a funnel facing forwards, it sounded a wee bit clearer than before. When it was still the funnel facing forwards, it sounded a bit blurrier.

With the cotton inserted, the sound returned to normal. No difference. When the paper was rolled up facing the front, it sounded much clearer. And when it was facing the side, the sound was projected and it sounded echoey.

Conclusion:

In the end our hypothesis was wrong. The sound remained normal. Most of the time there wasn’t much difference.

No sound in space

I have read this text and summarised it.


If you were in space and a spaceship blows up, you would not be able to hear a thing. This is because sound waves are energy that is created by vibrations. If you stretch a rubber band tightly with two fingers and pluck it with the other hand. It would vibrate and create sounds. Sound can be heard anywhere except space. Space is a vacuum and there is no matter in vacuums so there is nothing in space to vibrate. That is why to hear a loud noise in space is impossible.





Music/Sound

Music, it is amazing. Especially the impact and effect it has on our brain. Did you know that listening to old music can bring back old memories from the past. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that helps you to remember things. You should be careful with the volumes of music. If music is too loud it can damage your hearing or worse lose it!!!

There are all sorts of music. There’s Pop, Jazz, Rap, 70’s & 80’s, Reggae, R&B, Soul, Opera, Blues, Classical and my favorite Hip Hop. Adults probably like listening to music like 70’s & 80’s, Soul, Opera and Jazz. As kids and teenagers like Rap, R&B and Hip Hop.

There are amazingly creative artists around the world. Some of my favorites are Will.i.am, Trey Songz, Jason Derulo, Chris Brown and Usher. There are even band’s like One Direction and A Great Big World.

Music can also change the moods that you are in. For example if you listen to sad music you might begin feeling sad. If you listen to happy  music you might feel happy.  

Sound travels through sound waves. As it enters your ear it travels to your eardrum. Your eardrum vibrates (shakes) and creates signals that your brain understands. That signal enter’s the cochlear. The cochlear pushes it through the cochlear nerve. Finally it goes to the brain which your brain recognises as sound.

A world without sound would be a world without music. So sound is really important. If you want to keep listen to your favorite sounds and music you should take care of you hearing. Hearing is an amazing gift given to us all by the lord.

Science experiment

Science experiment:

Question:
What will happen to the sound if I cut the straw shorter and blow through it?

Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g.
I think that as I cut the straw shorter while blowing it, it will sound higher.

Materials needed:
Drinking straw
A pair of scissors

Experiment (procedure):
Step 1 -  Crease straw 2 to 3cm on one end

Step 2 -  Cut creased end into triangle shape and blow air

Step 3 -  Listen to the sound it makes and record

Step 4 - Cut  the straw shorter

Step 5 -  Blow on cut end listen and record

Data (What happened?)
15cm(long)
Makes a deep/low sound
10cm
Sound was higher
5cm
Sound was more higher pitched

Observations:
The table above shows that when the straw was 15cm it was deep and low pitched. As I cut it shorter and made it 10cm long it was higher pitched. Finally when it was 5 cm the pitch was more higher than ever.


Conclusion:
In the end my hypothesis was right. The sound became higher pitched as the straw got shorter. You should try this some time. I hope will be doing more exciting experiments like this during the term.

Life without sound


Imagine living without sound. Life would be difficult. We will not be able to hear anything. Although there are some sounds we hate. There are also some sound’s we like.

If we were deaf, we would not be able to hear cheerful bird’s chirping. We also would not be able to hear the new music hit’s that amazing music artists create. If anyone got kidnaped we would not be able to hear his or her scream or calls for help.

Also if your phone rings you will not be able to hear it, so you will be getting a lot of missed calls. Without sound we would not be able to hear the TV news. So you won’t be updated with what is happening in the world. While driving you will not be able to hear car’s coming by.

The good thing about being deaf is that if people say mean things to you, you would not be able to hear them. Thankfully we would not have to hear annoying people talk too much. We would not have to put up with the loud sound of thunder and rain keeping us awake at night.

Life without sound would be really different. Everyone will have to use sign language or type to communicate. So we will all have to learn sign language. We could still communicate with Facebook and email’s. People would stop using phone’s.

So you should take care of you hearing. If you don’t, you will have to learn sign language.

Immersion Assembly




It was the beginning of the term and we had Immersion Assembly. The whole school entered the hall. We were about to find out what we were all learning about. As we entered the hall, we noticed balloons filled with helium floating around the place.


Most of the teacher where dressed up in crazy costumes like wigs etc. The whole school theme was I like to move it move it. The first item was team 1 and they were learning about Zoo’s equipment that keeps us safe and how it relates to the equipment in our own homes.


Team 2 where learning about how airplanes fly. They also learn about gravity and how air balloons float. There performance was quite funny. Some teacher created planes out of cardboard boxes that they could wear.


Team 3 are learning about light and how it creates colors. They learn about the speed of light and how rainbows are created. First it rains and the water creates paddles. If the sun comes out it reflects light off the water and it creates colors that mix and create rainbows


Team 4 are learning about what things float and sink. They also learn things like the buoyancy of water. They watch video from youtube. Team 5(my team) are learning about sound and how it is created. We also learn about physics as well. I love what we're learning about.
